Bacon uses American Revolutionary War to reject idea of Ukrainian surrender

Rep. Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska, has been a vocal advocate for arming Ukraine to the fullest extent in order to help the country defend itself against Russian aggression. “I’m glad General George Washington didn’t say ‘Let’s surrender because Great Britain is too powerful and defeating them is unlikely.’ But, that is what some of our leaders are saying to Ukraine, the victim of a Russian invasion. Surrendering to a tyrant is not peace,” Bacon wrote in a post on social media.

Bacon’s call for arming Ukraine has been met with some opposition, but he remains steadfast in his belief that supporting Ukraine is not only a moral imperative but also in the best interests of the United States. In a recent New York Times op-ed, Bacon argued that abandoning Ukraine would have far-reaching consequences and that standing up to Russian aggression is crucial for national security.

“European Allies and U.S. should arm Ukraine to the max and help them defend their country against the Russians, and now the North Koreans and Chinese,” Bacon declared in another post on social media.

Despite criticism from some within his own party, including former President Donald Trump, Bacon has remained resolute in his stance on Russia and Ukraine. He believes that the cost of turning a blind eye to Russian aggression far outweighs any short-term benefits of appeasement.

“In recent weeks, too many of my fellow Republicans – including Mr. Trump – have treated Russia with velvet gloves, shying away from calling out Mr. Putin’s flatly illegal war and even blaming Ukraine for starting it,” Bacon wrote.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to escalate, Bacon’s message of standing up to tyrants and supporting freedom and democracy resonates strongly.
