Europe’s chief diplomat says Russia can be defeated via economic pressure

Kaja Kallas, the Chief European Union diplomat, recently refuted President Donald Trump’s claim that the EU was created to “screw” the United States. Speaking on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Kallas emphasized that the European Union’s primary purpose is to maintain peace among its member states.

She highlighted the historical significance of the EU as a “peace project” that has successfully prevented wars between European countries. Kallas also mentioned the importance of cooperation and unity within the EU, pointing out that the organization was instrumental in promoting transatlantic relations.

As someone who hails from a country that joined the EU two decades ago, Kallas expressed surprise at Trump’s remarks, noting that the U.S. had previously encouraged their involvement in the European Union. She emphasized the positive impact of the EU on international relations and peacekeeping efforts.

In light of recent tensions with Russia and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Kallas underscored the broad support for Ukraine within Europe. She revealed that she has been in communication with French President Emanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to coordinate efforts in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Kallas emphasized that the conflict in Ukraine extends beyond territorial disputes, characterizing it as a battle for freedom and the rule of law. She suggested that economic pressure could be leveraged to halt Russia’s aggression in the region, citing the country’s economic challenges as a potential vulnerability.

The EU diplomat urged the U.S. and Europe to unite in applying pressure on Russia to end the conflict, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts to achieve peace. She also addressed Trump’s recent comments criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, emphasizing the importance of supporting Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty.
