The Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Summer Games Embrace Inclusivity with Special Olympics Event
The Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Summer Games recently took place in Wagmatcook, running from August 15 to August 24. One of the highlights of this year’s event was the inclusion of a Special Olympics competition on August 20. Organized by Charise McDonald, the games aimed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for athletes of all abilities.
McDonald, who has two nephews with autism, emphasized the importance of the Special Olympics event. She shared, “They don’t really get to go out much, but when they get to do all these fun things and have fun in our community…it’s really nice.” The Special Olympics provided an opportunity for individuals with disabilities to showcase their skills and participate in a supportive and encouraging setting.
Chief Sidney Peters attended the Special Olympics to support his nephew, David Perkins, who was competing for the first time. Representing Glooscap First Nation, Perkins expressed his excitement for the hoop toss event, sharing, “I’m a good thrower.” Chief Peters highlighted the significance of inclusivity in the games, stating, “I think it plays a very important part in the games. It includes everybody so that’s what we really enjoy.”
The Special Olympics event welcomed participants of all ages, with individuals ranging from four to 63 years old. In addition to the Special Olympics, the Mi’kmaw Summer Games featured over two dozen other events, bringing together athletes and participants from various Mi’kmaq communities across the province.
Chief Norman Bernard of Wagmatcook emphasized that the games were designed to foster unity among different Mi’kmaq communities and to showcase the athletic abilities of participants. The annual event serves as a platform for individuals to come together, celebrate sports and culture, and create lasting memories.
The Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Summer Games exemplify the power of inclusivity and community spirit, providing a platform for individuals of all abilities to come together, compete, and have fun. The integration of the Special Olympics event underscores the importance of creating opportunities for everyone to participate and feel welcomed in the world of sports.
