Ex-NFL star Donald Driver takes stance on trans athletes in women’s sports

Former Green Bay Packers star Donald Driver recently shared his thoughts on transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports during an interview with Fox News Digital. Driver, who also coaches his own children in sports, emphasized the importance of competing in sports based on the gender assigned at birth.

“I think, you know, God made you how he made you,” Driver said. “And I think, at the end of the day, if he made you a male, then you compete in male sports. He made you a female, you compete in female sports. I think, at the end of the day, you can’t compete at that level.”

Driver highlighted the differences in physical attributes between males and females and stressed the importance of respecting the gender one is born with when it comes to sports participation. He acknowledged that while individuals must be open-minded about the situation, they should also be transparent in their conversations.

The conversation around transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports gained significant attention during President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign in 2024. Trump signed an executive order to prohibit transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports, leading to legal battles with several states.

A survey conducted by The New York Times/Ipsos in January revealed that a majority of Americans, including Democrats, do not support transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. Of the 2,128 respondents, 79% expressed opposition to biological males who identify as women participating in women’s sports.

Among Democrats, 67% were against transgender athletes competing with women, while 94% of Republicans shared the same sentiment. The survey highlighted the bipartisan consensus on the issue of transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports.
