Ex-sheriff’s employee arrested for helping boyfriend escape Orleans jail

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill recently announced the arrest of Darriana Burton, a former employee of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO), who is believed to be the girlfriend of Derrick Groves, a fugitive still on the run. Burton, 28, was taken into custody on Monday for allegedly assisting Groves in his escape from the facility. According to Murrill, Burton was found in New Orleans by the United States Marshalls Service, who executed an arrest warrant issued for her on May 27 for conspiracy to commit simple escape.

Officials have confirmed that Burton and Groves have been in an on-and-off relationship for three years and are currently dating. Burton worked at the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office from August 2022 to March 2023, during which time she was arrested and charged with bringing contraband into a jail and malfeasance. However, these charges were later dropped by the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office.

“We will continue to pursue anyone who has aided and abetted these criminals. We will find you, arrest you, and prosecute you to the full extent of the law,” stated Murrill. She expressed gratitude to the US Marshals Service for apprehending Burton and emphasized the commitment to capturing both Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves and returning them to prison.

Groves and Massey are still at large, with authorities actively working to locate and apprehend them. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office provided photos of the two fugitives, along with other individuals involved in the escape, urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to their capture.
