Exorcist priest accused of ripping out teen’s hair, ‘growling’ during cleansing

Father Carlos Martins, a prominent Michigan priest known for leading religious relic tours and co-hosting “The Exorcist Files” podcast, has found himself embroiled in controversy after being charged with misdemeanor battery in Illinois. The charges stem from an alarming incident in November where Martins allegedly placed a teenage girl’s hair in his mouth and proceeded to floss his teeth with it.
The unsettling event took place during a relic tour of St. Jude at the Queen of Apostles parish in Joliet, Illinois. According to a criminal complaint reviewed by Fox News Digital, Martins grabbed the hair of a 13-year-old girl and mimicked a flossing motion with it. Following this disturbing act, he reportedly made growling noises while sitting behind the girl.
The incident prompted the immediate shutdown of the religious tour, with local law enforcement called to intervene. Employees of the Diocese of Joliet confronted Martins, instructing him to leave the parish and the diocese. As a precaution, the veneration of the relic and evening mass were canceled in response to the unsettling behavior.
Martins was subsequently processed by the Joliet Police Department, arraigned, and released pending a pretrial hearing scheduled for February 24. While he is not required to appear at the hearing, the priest’s status with the Archdiocese of Detroit has been updated to reflect that his ministry has been revoked.
In response to the allegations, the Companions of the Cross, the religious order affiliated with Treasures of the Church, expressed their commitment to taking the matter seriously. Martins has voluntarily withdrawn from his pastoral duties while the investigation unfolds, with the church emphasizing the importance of due process for all parties involved.
As the legal proceedings continue, Martins’ attorney has not issued a public statement on the matter. The priest’s podcast, “The Exorcist Files,” which highlights his expertise in exorcism and shares personal stories, has faced scrutiny in light of the charges against him.
The unsettling incident has sparked outrage and concern within the Catholic community, prompting reflection on the responsibilities and conduct expected of clergy members. As the case unfolds, the church remains focused on supporting those affected by the situation and upholding the principles of justice and accountability.
