‘Extraordinary’: Trump secures rapid-fire victories on border cooperation amid tariff push
President Donald Trump has been on a winning streak when it comes to getting other countries to assist the U.S. with border security. Through a combination of tariff threats and diplomatic outreach, Trump has been able to push allies to take action.
Recently, both Canada and Mexico announced new measures to assist the U.S. at their respective borders, leading to the U.S. pausing the implementation of planned tariffs. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed a $1.3 billion border plan and the appointment of a “fentanyl czar.” Trudeau also announced new helicopters, technology, and enhanced coordination with U.S. authorities.
Similarly, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Mexico will be deploying 10,000 troops to the U.S. border in exchange for a pause on tariffs that were set to impact Mexican goods entering the U.S.
Trump has a history of using tariffs to secure border agreements. In 2019, he expanded the Remain-in-Mexico policy with Mexico’s agreement after a similar tariff threat. Last week, Colombia was also strong-armed into cooperation after Trump threatened 25% tariffs on all goods from the country.
Not all of Trump’s wins have required tariff threats. Venezuela recently agreed to accept its nationals being deported from the U.S. after negotiations with Trump’s envoy for special missions. Additionally, El Salvador has agreed to accept deportees of any nationality following a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
During the meeting, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele announced a unique agreement to allow illegal immigrants facing deportation to be booked into the country’s prison system. Bukele offered to take in convicted criminals, including those who are U.S. citizens, into a mega-prison in exchange for a fee. This agreement was hailed by Rubio as unprecedented and extraordinary.
Bukele also committed to taking back Salvadoran MS-13 gang members in the U.S. illegally and agreed to accept and incarcerate criminal illegal aliens from any country, especially those affiliated with Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang.
Rubio is currently on a Central American tour and is expected to make stops in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.
President Trump’s recent successes in securing border agreements through a combination of tariff threats and diplomatic outreach demonstrate his commitment to protecting the U.S. border. These rapid-fire wins highlight the effectiveness of his strategies in getting other countries to assist in border security efforts.
