‘Eyesore’ scaffolding in place since 2023 hurting business at Halifax wine bar, says co-owner

Challenges Faced by Obladee Wine Bar in Downtown Halifax
Since the summer of 2023, the Obladee wine bar in downtown Halifax has been struggling due to the scaffolding that surrounds its business. Christian Rankin, the owner, expressed his discouragement as the temporary structure is obstructing the view of the wine bar, making it difficult for customers to know that they are open for business.
The scaffolding was erected in July 2023 following an order from the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) due to concerns about the deteriorating facade of the building. Despite multiple warnings about falling debris, the necessary repairs have not been made, causing financial losses for Obladee.
Rankin mentioned that the space occupied by the scaffolding has forced them to forgo their outdoor patio, leading to a significant decrease in seating capacity. Despite paying rent for patio access, the current situation is impacting their business operations.
The property owner, the Caryi Group, has faced financial difficulties following the passing of its principal, Steve Caryi, in 2023. With mortgage debts totaling $47 million, the group is now undergoing insolvency proceedings, with the properties, including the Obladee wine bar, up for sale.
Rankin emphasized the urgency of resolving the building issues before the upcoming patio season to prevent further financial strain on Obladee. He urged the municipality to intervene if the property owner fails to address the necessary repairs promptly.
As the fate of Obladee hangs in the balance, Rankin remains hopeful that a resolution will be reached to save the business from potential closure. Despite efforts to engage the property owner, the uncertainty surrounding the building’s future remains a pressing concern for the wine bar.
CBC News reached out to the municipality for a response to the situation, highlighting the importance of timely action to support local businesses like Obladee in overcoming their challenges.
