Father of Saskatoon homicide victim says son was more than his addictions

Terry Romanski, a sandblasting business owner in Alberta, shared his heartbreaking story of his son Chad Romanski’s struggles with addiction and ultimate tragic end. Chad, 31, had been battling addiction for much of his adult life, with sobriety being a constant challenge. Despite his struggles, Chad never lost touch with his family.

By the time the May long weekend rolled around, Terry knew something was wrong. Chad had been living in Saskatoon, trying to get clean, but his final text to his father requesting $30 for gas indicated that he was in trouble. Days later, Chad’s white Dodge Journey was found abandoned on a street in Saskatoon, with the keys still in the ignition. The family reported him missing, and a missing person poster was created, showing a stark contrast between the gaunt man in the photo and the vibrant son Terry remembered.

The agonizing wait came to an end on June 4 when Saskatoon police informed Terry that they had found Chad’s remains in a shallow grave. His death is being treated as a homicide. Terry and his brother visited the site where Chad was found, seeking closure and saying their final goodbyes.

Chad, the youngest of two, was described by Terry as a lively and mischievous child who loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandfather and had dreams of starting his own business. However, addiction took hold of him in his 20s, leading to a cycle of sobriety and relapse.

Terry and Chad had many honest conversations about his struggles, with Chad expressing a desire to break free from his destructive lifestyle. Despite his best efforts, Chad’s addiction ultimately consumed him. Terry recently took Chad’s remains back to Alberta for cremation, ensuring that his son would always be with him.
