FBI agents detail J6 role in exhaustive questionnaire, mass firings considered unlikel

A recent lawsuit filed by nine current FBI agents and employees in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has shed light on a questionnaire that was sent to thousands of individuals within the agency. The questionnaire, which was sent out earlier this month, included detailed inquiries about the agents’ involvement in the investigation into the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riots.

The questions posed in the questionnaire ranged from whether the agents testified in any criminal trials related to the riots, to when they last participated in investigation-related activities. Additionally, agents were asked about their participation in grand jury subpoenas, whether they collaborated with other FBI field offices, and if they worked as case agents for specific investigations.

Former Justice Department officials have expressed concerns that the investigation and any potential retaliatory measures could have a chilling effect on the FBI’s work across its more than 52 field offices. However, a retired FBI agent reassured that the acting director and deputy director of the FBI are still in their positions. This individual emphasized that the FBI personnel involved in the Jan. 6 investigation followed all Bureau and DOJ guidelines, and any violations of federal statutes were proven in federal courts.

President Donald Trump has insinuated that his administration may take action against FBI employees involved in the Jan. 6 investigation, calling the bureau “corrupt.” He mentioned that his nominee for FBI director, Kash Patel, would help address any issues within the agency. Despite these statements, there are currently no concrete plans to remove or take punitive action against the agents in question.
