Fearing Trump will cross border militarily to pursue cartels, Mexico moves to reform constitution

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Thursday her plans to introduce constitutional reforms aimed at safeguarding Mexico’s sovereignty amid concerns that the U.S. military could potentially cross the border to target Mexican drug cartels. This move comes in response to the Trump administration’s recent designation of six Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, raising fears of potential U.S. military intervention in Mexico.

Sheinbaum emphasized that the Mexican people will not tolerate any form of external interference that threatens the nation’s independence and sovereignty. The designated Mexican cartels include well-known groups such as the Sinaloa, Jalisco, Zetas, Gulf Cartels, Cartel Unidos, and “La Nueva Familia Michoacana,” as well as international gangs like the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua and the Salvadoran Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13).

Notably, Mexico was not consulted about the U.S. decision to designate these cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexico has always opposed such actions by the U.S. and stressed the importance of respecting Mexico’s sovereignty. Former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had previously implemented restrictions on the operations of foreign agents in Mexico, and Sheinbaum aims to solidify these limitations in the Mexican constitution.

In addition to protecting Mexico’s sovereignty, Sheinbaum also proposed constitutional reforms to impose harsher penalties on individuals, both Mexican nationals and foreigners, engaged in gun trafficking. This initiative aligns with Mexico’s long-standing demand for the U.S. to do more to prevent the smuggling of firearms into Mexico from the United States.

It is crucial to uphold Mexico’s sovereignty and address the challenges posed by drug cartels without compromising the nation’s integrity. Sheinbaum’s proposed constitutional reforms underscore Mexico’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and addressing security threats within its borders. The integration of these reforms into the Mexican constitution will further strengthen Mexico’s ability to combat organized crime and protect its citizens.
