London – Metal Lockers Used by Real Madrid Players Up for Auction

Calling all sports fans! A unique opportunity has arisen to own a piece of soccer history as metal lockers that once housed the belongings of some of the world’s greatest players are now available for auction. Sotheby’s is presenting 24 lockers from the dressing room of the renowned club Real Madrid, used by the team between 2002 and 2022 before being removed during stadium renovations.

These iconic lockers, which were once utilized by soccer legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Sergio Ramos, and Luís Figo, are being sold individually with bidding starting at US$12,600 per piece. The artifacts, along with other memorabilia from the team, are currently open for online bidding until Nov. 26 in a collaborative auction between Sotheby’s and Real Madrid’s memorabilia partner, Pursuit 3 Marketing Group.

A portion of the auction proceeds will be donated to Real Madrid’s charitable foundation, adding a philanthropic aspect to this exciting event. Sotheby’s sports and modern collectibles specialist, Brendan Hawkes, expressed his enthusiasm for offering these historic relics, providing the public with a unique glimpse into the esteemed Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and the illustrious history of one of the world’s most decorated football clubs.

This auction is not only a testament to the growing popularity of sports memorabilia but also signifies a shift towards a wider range of collectible items beyond traditional jerseys and equipment. In a recent sale, Sotheby’s auctioned Kobe Bryant’s locker from the Staples Center for an impressive US$2.9 million, showcasing the increasing value placed on items of sporting significance.

The record for the highest price paid for sports memorabilia is held by the jersey worn by Babe Ruth during the 1932 World Series, where he famously called his shot. This iconic piece was sold for an astounding US$24.12 million at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, highlighting the enduring appeal and value of sports artifacts.
