Federal judge cancels planned hearing to review Trump deportations

The federal judge who blocked the Trump administration’s use of a 1798 wartime law to immediately deport Venezuelan nationals had to cancel a planned court hearing after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the president. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg announced in a minute order that the Tuesday afternoon hearing would be vacated in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling. The high court determined that the appropriate venue for such proceedings is the Southern District of Texas or wherever the plaintiffs subject to potential removal are currently held.

The Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling established due process protections for migrants, including the right to appear in court before being deported. Boasberg instructed the plaintiffs in the case to file a notice by April 16 indicating whether they still have a basis to proceed with their motion for a preliminary injunction in the D.C. Court. If they believe they can proceed, they must propose a briefing schedule for the case to be reviewed in the D.C. court.

This development has significant implications for the ongoing legal battle over the administration’s use of the wartime law to deport Venezuelan nationals. It highlights the importance of due process rights for migrants facing deportation and sets a precedent for future cases involving similar issues.

This is an evolving story, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
