The funding is coming from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, according to an announcement Tuesday,
In HRM, this funding will provide for the installation of 46 level 2 and 10 level 3 fast chargers for a total of 56 chargers at “key locations across the Halifax region.”

Installation is expected to start in the spring.
Installing EV chargers throughout HRM is a project from HalifACT, HRM’s climate action plan. In January 2023, Kevin Boutilier, manager of community energy for HRM, told SaltWire that if everything goes according to plan, they planned to install the first seven public charging stations by the fall of 2023 with another 11 by the spring of 2024.
According to a news release from Natural Resources, the federal government has allocated over $1 billion in funding to support EV charging stations — 43,000 chargers so far. The release states that by phasing in 100 per cent new electric vehicle sales by 2035, over 360 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 2050, avoiding almost $100 billion in global damages.
