Investigation into triple-fatality crash near Amherst still in early stages, RCMP says

Mounties are still working on figuring out what happened in a two-vehicle crash near Amherst Saturday night that killed three people and injured three others.

Police said an SUV and a car collided on Highway 2 in Fort Lawrence at about 10:05 p.m. Saturday. The SUV ended up on its side after the collision.

The three deceased and one other person were in the SUV, while two people were in the car.

“We’re still very early days in the investigation,” RCMP spokesman Cpl. Chris Marshall said Monday afternoon. “We’re still very much trying to piece together what happened.”

Part of that is determining who was driving the SUV, he said.

“Until we can figure out the mechanism of how it happened and look at the analyst’s report it would be premature to suggest where the investigation is going to go at this point,” Marshall said.

He said police aren’t commenting on the nature of the relationship between the deceased, but online posts say they were Travis Killen, 26, his two-month-old son, Ace Gabriel Killen, and the boy’s maternal grandmother, Amanda Gabriel, 43.

The fourth person in the vehicle, a 21-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Travis Killen’s sister started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to support Travis and Ace’s family and pay for funeral costs. She wrote that Travis “had a big heart and cared a lot about those that he loved,” and that the family appreciated the overwhelming support they’d received from the community.

A group called the Springhill Pit Pond Helping Hands Committee is donating proceeds from a silent auction Nov. 3 during a Gypsy Reese concert at the Springhill Community Centre to the families of the three victims.

Two people were in the car: a 19-year-old woman who suffered serious injuries, and a 24-year-old man who sustained minor injuries. They were both taken to hospital.
