Ferry crossings between NS and PEI canceled on Saturday

Anyone coming to or leaving Prince Edward Island on Saturday will need to take the Confederation Bridge or a plane.

The ferry between PEI and Nova Scotia, the MV Confederation, is once again experiencing “technical difficulties” and all crossings for June 17 have been cancelled, according to a press release from Northumberland Ferries Ltd.

Mark Wilson, senior vice president of Northumberland Ferries Ltd., said technical teams are working to resolve the issue.

“We are having some mechanical issues with part of the port engine connection to the center gearbox,” he said in an email.

“It is not serious as it involves a part replacement. We are not sure how long it will take to replace the part and will be out of service for the rest of today. We will have a better idea of the length of the out of service later this afternoon. We are doing everything we can to rectify this as soon as possible.”

It is the second time this month that sailings have been canceled due to technical problems. The problems are not related, Wilson said.

The Confederation is currently the only ferry between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. MV Holiday Island was permanently taken out of service after a fire on board last July.

MV Saaremaa 1, on loan from Quebec, replaced the Holiday Island last summer and is scheduled to do the same during peak tourist season this summer.
