Fetterman bashes Gaetz nomination for attorney general

U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., recently criticized President-elect Trump’s decision to nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz as the next attorney general, calling it a “God tier kind of trolling.” Fetterman expressed his views to reporters, acknowledging that while some of Trump’s picks were commendable, Gaetz did not fall into that category.

Fetterman emphasized that the opinions of Democrats on Gaetz were not the main focus, but rather the justification of his selection by Republican colleagues. He described Gaetz’s nomination as nothing but trolling and questioned how GOP members could support such a controversial choice.

In contrast to Gaetz, Trump also nominated Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., for secretary of state and Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., for ambassador to the United Nations. Fetterman regarded these selections as serious picks. He also pointed out that Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., had previously served as attorney general of Missouri before transitioning to Congress, highlighting him as a more suitable candidate compared to Gaetz.

Despite the nomination, Gaetz may encounter difficulties in securing confirmation from the Senate. According to a Republican senator who spoke anonymously, it is unlikely that Gaetz will be confirmed. Another Senate Republican source echoed this sentiment, stating that it “ain’t gonna happen.”

Gaetz resigned from the House of Representatives following Trump’s announcement of his nomination. An ongoing House Ethics investigation is looking into allegations of sexual misconduct, drug abuse, and improper gift acceptance against Gaetz. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., the chair of the Ethics Committee, noted that the investigation would cease if Gaetz assumes the role of attorney general.

In addition to the ethics probe, Gaetz was previously under investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for sex trafficking allegations. However, the DOJ concluded the investigation last year and determined that Gaetz would not face any charges.

The controversy surrounding Gaetz’s nomination has sparked debates and discussions among lawmakers and the public. As the confirmation process unfolds, the outcome remains uncertain, leaving many to speculate on the potential implications of Gaetz serving as the next attorney general.
