Fetterman: Those hoping Trump fails are ‘rooting against the nation’

Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, recently expressed his hope for the success of President-elect Trump. In an interview on ABC’s “This Week” with co-anchor Jonathan Karl, Fetterman emphasized that he is not rooting against the president-elect, as doing so would be akin to rooting against the nation itself.

“I’m not rooting against him,” Fetterman stated. “If you’re rooting against the president, you are rooting against the nation. And I’m not ever going to be where I want a president to fail. So, country first. I know that’s become maybe like a cliche, but it happens to be true.”

During the interview, Fetterman also addressed the characterization of Trump’s movement as fascist, noting that while Vice President Kamala Harris had referred to Trump as a fascist during her campaign, he personally did not believe that was an accurate label.

“Fascism, that’s not a word that regular people use, you know?” Fetterman remarked. “I think people are going to decide who is the candidate that’s going to protect and project, you know, my version of the American way of life, and that’s what happened.”

Fetterman further discussed his meetings with Trump’s Cabinet nominees, emphasizing that his approach to confirmation votes would be guided by an open mind and an informed perspective.

“I believe that it’s appropriate and the responsibility of a U.S. senator to have a conversation with President-elect Trump’s nominees. That’s why I met with Elise Stefanik and Pete Hegseth, just wrapped with Tulsi Gabbard, and look forward to my meetings with others soon,” Fetterman stated in a post on X.

“My votes will come from an open mind and an informed opinion after having a conversation with them. That’s not controversial, it’s my job,” he added.

Fetterman also reiterated his stance that Democrats should not overreact to everything Trump does, noting that it is important to maintain perspective as Trump has not yet taken office.

In conclusion, Fetterman’s message of unity and open-mindedness serves as a reminder of the importance of putting the country first, regardless of political differences. As the nation prepares for the transition of power, Fetterman’s approach to engaging with the incoming administration reflects a commitment to thoughtful consideration and constructive dialogue.
