Fetterman would be willing to confirm Dr. Oz — on one condition
Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, recently announced that he would support the confirmation of his former political rival, Dr. Mehmet Oz, to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), as long as Oz commits to safeguarding these crucial government programs.
In a tweet, Fetterman stated, “If Dr. Oz is about protecting and preserving Medicare and Medicaid, I’m voting for the dude.” This endorsement comes despite Fetterman’s victory over Oz in Pennsylvania’s 2022 U.S. Senate race.
Fetterman emphasized that despite their political differences and past rivalry, he holds no animosity towards Oz. President-elect Donald Trump nominated Oz to head the CMS, an agency under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Trump praised Oz’s qualifications for the role, stating, “America is facing a Healthcare Crisis, and there may be no Physician more qualified and capable than Dr. Oz to Make America Healthy Again.” Trump also mentioned Oz’s collaboration with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to address chronic diseases.
Kennedy, who was nominated by Trump to lead the HHS, expressed his excitement about Oz’s appointment, tweeting, “Very excited that my friend @DrOz has agreed to run CMS. Thank you @realDonaldTrump for this outstanding nomination. Welcome Dr. Oz to The Avengers. Let’s Make America Healthy Again!”
In response to Trump’s nomination, Oz expressed his honor and commitment to serving the country. He stated, “I look forward to serving my country to Make America Healthy Again under the leadership of HHS Secretary @RobertKennedyJr.”
Despite some concerns from pro-life groups regarding Kennedy’s evolving views on abortion, Oz’s nomination received support from Sen. Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky. Paul described Oz as an “excellent fit” for the CMS administrator role, citing his background as a cardiothoracic surgeon and public health advocate.
In conclusion, Fetterman’s willingness to support Oz’s confirmation underscores the importance of prioritizing the protection and preservation of Medicare and Medicaid. With bipartisan endorsement and a focus on healthcare reform, Oz’s potential leadership at CMS could bring positive changes to the healthcare system.
