Fiery boat explosion in Florida marina leaves one dead, several injured
Five people were injured, and one person was found dead following a tragic boat explosion at the Lauderdale Marina in Fort Lauderdale. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on December 23, prompting multiple 911 calls reporting an explosion and a vessel on fire.
When Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR) arrived on the scene, they discovered significant fire on one boat that quickly spread to another nearby vessel. Five individuals were rushed to hospitals, with three of them sustaining severe traumatic injuries, according to FLFR.
Sadly, FLFR dive teams, in collaboration with the Broward Sheriff’s Office, recovered a sixth victim who was found deceased in the water. Witnesses described the horrifying scene as chaos, with one witness recounting how the dock was engulfed in flames following a loud explosion.
Maria Sans, another witness, shared her experience of screaming and trying to locate her family amidst the chaos. A local waiter, Tamer Dimiati, recalled seeing the boat explode and burst into flames, prompting him to rush to offer assistance to those in need.
The dock where the explosion occurred serves as a refueling station, and this is not the first time such a tragic incident has taken place at the location. A similar explosion and fire had occurred there just weeks prior, adding to the concerns surrounding safety measures at the marina.
FLFR emphasized patient privacy concerns and refrained from disclosing the identities of those involved in the incident. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has taken the lead in investigating the cause of the explosion and subsequent fires. Once the vessels have been removed from the water for closer examination, investigators hope to gain a better understanding of what led to the tragic event.
