Fiona fallout: Insurance dispute has kept N.S. single mom, son out of their home for 2½ years

Claudia Sheehy and her son, Ciaran, moved into their dream home in Grand Lake, N.S., three years ago with high hopes for the future. Situated on a half hectare of land overlooking the lake, with a park within walking distance and a nearby farm where Ciaran could potentially take horseback riding lessons, it seemed like the perfect place to raise a family.
“It’s just beautiful out here,” Sheehy said. “If you could see the sunsets, the view just being on the water, [the great] neighbours, it’s everything I would want a little boy to have growing up with.”
However, their idyllic life was turned upside down when post-tropical storm Fiona hit in September 2022, tearing part of the roof off their home. This event set off a series of challenges that have left the family displaced and struggling. Despite filing an insurance claim with Allstate, Sheehy has not received adequate support to repair the damages caused by the storm.
Living in Airbnbs and hotels since the storm, Sheehy and Ciaran have faced numerous hardships. Water leaks into the home whenever it rains or snows, causing damage and creating an unhealthy living environment. The stress of the situation has taken a toll on Sheehy’s health, leading to anxiety and depression.
Following the initial storm damage, a second storm in November 2022 further exacerbated the problems with the roof, requiring temporary repairs to prevent further structural damage. Despite efforts to find a company to complete the necessary repairs, disagreements over costs have stalled progress, leaving the family in limbo.
Frustrated by the lack of action from Allstate, Sheehy filed a lawsuit against the insurance company in September 2023. The legal process has been complicated by the appraisal clause, which requires both parties to hire appraisers to determine the value of the claim. This additional step has added financial strain to an already challenging situation.
As the legal battle continues, Sheehy remains hopeful for a resolution that will allow her and Ciaran to return to their home and rebuild their lives. She is determined to seek justice and hold Allstate accountable for their handling of the claim.
Despite the setbacks and hardships they have faced, Sheehy remains determined to overcome this challenge and provide a stable and secure future for her son. With the support of her lawyer and a commitment to seeking fair compensation, she is focused on reclaiming their home and moving forward from this difficult chapter in their lives.
