President Donald Trump made headlines once again with his recent decision to fire U.S. Federal Election Commission Commissioner and Chair Ellen Weintraub. In a bold move, Trump sent a letter to Weintraub informing her of her “removal” from her position.
Since taking office on Jan. 20, President Trump has been on a mission to overhaul the government, which has involved sidelining and firing numerous top agency officials and civil servants. His goal is to replace them with more loyalists and reduce the size of the bureaucracy. Weintraub, like many others, found herself in Trump’s crosshairs, but she did not back down without a fight.
In a post on X, Weintraub revealed that she had received a letter from the President notifying her of her removal as Commissioner and Chair of the FEC. She made it clear that there is a legal process for replacing FEC commissioners, and Trump’s actions did not adhere to that process. Despite the setback, Weintraub expressed her determination to continue serving the American people and causing “good trouble” along the way.
Accompanying her post was a copy of the letter from the White House, dated Jan. 31, 2025, and signed by Trump. The letter simply stated, “Dear Commissioner Weintraub, You are hereby removed as a Member of the Federal Election Commission, effective immediately. Thank you for your service on the Commission.”
This is not the first time Weintraub has clashed with President Trump. In 2019, she criticized his unfounded claims of voter fraud as “damaging to our democracy.” During an appearance on CNN, Weintraub called out the President for spreading misinformation without any evidence to support his claims. She refuted Trump’s allegations of widespread voter fraud in the 2016 election and emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
As the controversy surrounding Weintraub’s removal continues to unfold, it is clear that she remains steadfast in her commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and serving the American people. Only time will tell what the future holds for the FEC and its former Chair, Ellen Weintraub.
