First Black GOP Congresswoman stopping treatments for brain cancer, daughter says

Former U.S. Rep. Mia Love’s family is facing a difficult time as her cancer has stopped responding to treatments. Love’s daughter, Abigale, shared the heartbreaking news on her mother’s X account, stating that they are now focusing on making the most of the time they have left with her.
Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of brain tumor, in 2022 and went public with her diagnosis in August 2023. Despite undergoing various treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy, her cancer has unfortunately continued to progress. Abigale expressed the family’s shift in focus from treatment to cherishing the moments they have left together.
Mia Love made history as the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress in 2014, representing a district near Salt Lake City. She was also the first Black congresswoman from Utah and served two terms in Congress before being defeated in 2018. Throughout her career, Love was known for her work on the Financial Services Committee and for being the only Republican member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
In a recent post on her X account, Love shared her gratitude for the support of her faith and family during these challenging years. She encouraged others facing difficulties to keep fighting and hold onto hope. Love revealed that her journey with cancer began during a vacation in 2022 when she started experiencing severe headaches. Subsequent tests revealed a tumor, leading to surgery to remove a majority of it.
Despite her diagnosis, Love remained active in politics, speaking out against political violence and expressing her support for certain candidates. Her dedication to civility and respectful discourse was evident in her posts and actions.
Following Abigale’s announcement, Love received an outpouring of support from colleagues and friends, including Sen. Mike Lee, Gov. Spencer Cox, and former Rep. Adam Kinzinger. The Utah community rallied around Love and her family during this difficult time, sending prayers and well wishes their way.
As Mia Love’s family navigates this challenging period, they are leaning on each other for strength and finding comfort in the love and support of those around them. Their focus now is on making the most of the time they have left together and cherishing the moments they share. Love’s legacy as a trailblazer in politics and her unwavering dedication to serving others will continue to inspire those who know her.
