Flooding at large New Glasgow nursing home displaces 32 residents

Thirty-two residents of Glen Haven Manor, a long-term care home in New Glasgow, N.S., were evacuated earlier this week due to a water main break in the basement that caused significant flooding in one of the units. Steve Scannell, the facility’s administrator, confirmed that all residents who were forced to leave the unit are safe and unharmed.

Some residents have been relocated to other homes, while others were moved to vacant rooms within Glen Haven. However, there are still a number of residents who are currently staying in common areas at the nursing home. Scannell stated that they are actively working on a plan to find comfortable, longer-term living spaces for those residing in the common areas, but the schedule for their return to the care unit is still unknown.

Glen Haven Manor, which boasts 200 beds and is jointly owned by the towns of New Glasgow, Stellarton, Trenton, and Westville, has been a staple in the community since its establishment in 1969. Despite substantial renovations over the years, the town council in New Glasgow has been exploring options to build a 144-bed replacement facility, although previous proposals were met with opposition.

The water main break at Glen Haven Manor originated from a pipe beneath the maintenance office, with the exact cause still under assessment. An engineering firm is scheduled to visit the site to further investigate the incident. Scannell commended the staff for their swift and calm response to the flood, describing their efforts as “amazing.” The Nova Scotia government and various community partners have also been providing assistance in the aftermath of the incident.
