Florida Gov. DeSantis takes victory lap on Florida new laws enforcing Trump immigration crackdown
Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida proudly declared that his state is leading the charge in implementing President Donald Trump’s tough stance on illegal immigration. During his State of the State address, DeSantis highlighted the comprehensive immigration laws passed by the GOP-controlled legislature in a special session.
“We are convening for the regular legislative session having already enacted groundbreaking legislation to fulfill the historic mission of delivering on President Donald Trump’s mandate to end the illegal immigration crisis once and for all,” DeSantis proclaimed to lawmakers in Tallahassee.
DeSantis emphasized that Florida has taken swift and decisive action compared to other states. The new measures enhance immigration enforcement by empowering state and local law enforcement agencies. He stressed that entering Florida illegally is now a crime, ending the practice of catch and release, and requiring all law enforcement to assist in immigration enforcement efforts.
Furthermore, the governor highlighted the provision in the new law that imposes the death penalty on unauthorized immigrants who commit serious crimes like first-degree murder or child rape. These measures go beyond the executive orders signed by Trump upon his return to the White House.
In a press conference following his address, DeSantis described the legislation as “momentous” and praised Florida for leading the way in securing the state’s borders.
The passage of the immigration bills was the result of a compromise between DeSantis and Republican legislative leaders after a contentious standoff. The governor had called for a special legislative session, but lawmakers initially adjourned before passing their own immigration bills in a separate session. Despite the challenges, DeSantis acknowledged the collaborative effort to reach a resolution.
DeSantis, who previously ran against Trump in the Republican primaries, received praise from the former president for his proactive approach to immigration reform. Trump commended DeSantis for calling the special session and urged other governors to follow suit.
