Florida man arrested after alleged online Trump assassination threats; Secret Service investigating

The Secret Service is currently conducting an investigation following the arrest of a Florida man in West Palm Beach. Shannon Depararro Atkins, 46, was charged with calling for the assassination of President Donald Trump on Facebook. Atkins, a resident of West Palm Beach, is facing charges of felony intimidation, drug possession, and smuggling contraband in a county detention center.

According to West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo, a tip was received by the FBI National Threat Operations Center late Sunday, reporting Atkins’ violent threats against the president on social media. A Palm Beach detective started working on the case the following day and discovered disturbing posts made by Atkins. Some of the posts included references to past assassinations and a plea for someone to harm the president.

Authorities secured a probable cause warrant and conducted surveillance, leading to Atkins’ arrest near one of his residences at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. During the arrest, officers found three bags of cocaine in Atkins’ possession. When questioned, Atkins admitted to writing the threatening Facebook posts but claimed he was joking.

The Secret Service has been informed of the case and is reviewing it to determine if federal charges will be filed. The FBI is also involved in the investigation, as confirmed by authorities. Chief Araujo emphasized the seriousness of making threats, even in a joking manner, especially in today’s climate.

Atkins’ bond was set at $5,000 for the drug charges, but he was denied bond for the threats against President Trump. The Secret Service reiterated that all threats against protectees are taken seriously, and they investigate them thoroughly.
