Ford calls on Carney to fast-track Ontario resource projects after Liberal election win

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has extended his congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney following the Liberal Party’s victory in the federal election. In a statement released on Tuesday, Ford expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Carney, particularly in the realm of mining the province’s critical mineral supply.

“Ontario is prepared to collaborate with the federal government to revitalize our economy by reducing bureaucratic hurdles, thereby enhancing Canada’s economic competitiveness, resilience, and self-sufficiency in the face of tariffs and other obstacles,” Ford stated in the news release.

The Premier also expressed his gratitude towards Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, and all candidates who participated in the election for their dedication to democracy. Despite Poilievre and Singh losing their seats in the election, Poilievre has indicated his intention to remain in his position.

Ford urged Carney to uphold his promise to expedite critical mineral and resource development projects, specifically in the Ring of Fire region in northwestern Ontario. He also called on Carney to support Ontario in future nuclear energy initiatives and infrastructure projects essential for nation-building, such as pipelines, highways, railways, and airports.

Furthermore, Ford emphasized Ontario’s commitment to collaborating with the federal government, as well as other provinces and territories, to eliminate internal trade barriers. Infrastructure projects within the province will not only facilitate the expansion of Canadian goods into new markets but also strengthen national unity and reduce dependence on the United States.

The Premier reiterated his longstanding plea for federal bail reform, urging Carney to take decisive action in removing violent, repeat offenders from the streets.

While Ford’s statement did not directly address Conservative MP Jamil Jivani’s critical remarks about him, made in an interview with CBC News post-election, it is evident that tensions within the Conservative party remain unresolved.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie also conveyed their congratulations to Carney following the election results. Chow expressed her readiness to collaborate with the federal government in safeguarding workers and businesses against potential U.S. tariff threats, while Crombie underscored the importance of Carney’s leadership in navigating challenges and ensuring a fair and resilient future for Canada.
