Former B.C. premier John Horgan, Canada’s ambassador to Germany, dead at 65

Former British Columbia premier John Horgan has passed away at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer, CBC News has confirmed. Horgan, who was also serving as Canada’s ambassador to Germany, had been diagnosed with cancer for a third time during a routine follow-up appointment for his previous throat cancer earlier this year. He took leave from his position at that time.

Horgan, survived by his wife Ellie and their two sons Evan and Nate, passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria on Tuesday morning. In a statement released by his family, they expressed their deep sorrow at his passing, describing him as a beloved husband, father, and friend who dedicated his life to the wellbeing of British Columbia.

Born in Victoria and raised by his single mother, Horgan attended Trent University in Ontario and later completed a master’s degree in history in Australia. His political career began when he worked on Parliament Hill before being elected to the B.C. Legislature in 2005. He went on to become the leader of the NDP in 2014 and was elected as B.C.’s premier in 2017, serving until 2022 when he stepped down due to health reasons.

During his time as premier, Horgan made significant strides in areas such as eliminating medical services plan premiums, adopting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, and leading the province through challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters. He was known for his genuine care for people and his ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life.

Former colleagues and friends remembered Horgan as a warm, authentic, and dedicated public servant who had a knack for making people feel seen and heard. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Horgan as Canada’s ambassador to Germany in 2023, recognizing his commitment to public service and his love for British Columbia.

Horgan’s passing is a significant loss for the province and the country as a whole. His legacy of compassion, dedication, and leadership will be remembered by all those whose lives he touched. As flags are lowered to half-mast in his honor, British Columbians mourn the loss of a truly remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on the political landscape and the hearts of those he served.
