Former Canadian soldier David Lavery ‘safe’ in Qatar after release from Afghanistan, Joly says

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly has confirmed that Canadian Armed Forces veteran David Lavery is safe and in good spirits after being detained in Afghanistan and subsequently released in Qatar. Joly expressed her gratitude to Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Qatar’s foreign affairs minister, for his assistance in facilitating Lavery’s release.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Lavery was detained in Kabul on November 11, 2024, which also happened to be Remembrance Day. The Canadian government sought the help of Qatar in securing Lavery’s release, and Qatari mediators worked closely with Canadian officials to ensure his safe return.

Upon his arrival in Doha, Lavery underwent a medical assessment and was reunited with his family. The Veterans Transition Network, which had previously expressed concerns about Lavery’s well-being, released a statement confirming his safe release from Taliban detention in Afghanistan. CEO Oliver Thorne praised Lavery for his commitment and bravery in supporting Canada’s mission and aiding Afghan migrants.

The network and Lavery’s family had kept details of his situation private in order to minimize media speculation and protect his safety. Lavery had been actively involved in humanitarian work in Afghanistan prior to his detention, and had regularly traveled to the country to provide assistance and pay tribute at the Canadian monument in Kabul.

Global Affairs Canada has been contacted for further information on the situation. The successful resolution of Lavery’s ordeal highlights the importance of international cooperation in ensuring the safety and well-being of Canadian citizens abroad.
