Former Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy returns to NFL after one season at UCLA: report

Eric Bieniemy, former offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, is making a return to the NFL with the Chicago Bears. According to a report by CBS Sports on Saturday, Bieniemy has agreed to take on the role of running backs coach under newly hired head coach Ben Johnson.

Bieniemy, who most recently served as the offensive coordinator at UCLA, brings a wealth of experience to the Bears’ coaching staff. A former standout running back in college, Bieniemy has also coached ball carriers at both Colorado and UCLA in the past.

After transitioning to the professional ranks as the Minnesota Vikings running backs coach in 2006, Bieniemy eventually returned to his alma mater, Colorado, as the Buffaloes’ offensive coordinator in 2011. However, it was his time with the Kansas City Chiefs that truly propelled him into the spotlight.

As part of the Chiefs’ coaching staff, Bieniemy was a key figure in two Super Bowl victories before deciding to explore new opportunities after the 2022 season. He then joined the Washington Commanders as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in 2023, where he had the chance to call plays under head coach Andy Reid.

Now, Bieniemy is set to bring his championship-winning experience to the Bears’ coaching staff. Johnson has also brought in Declan Doyle as the offensive coordinator and Antwaan Randle El as the assistant head coach. Randle El, who previously worked with Johnson in Detroit, will be responsible for coaching the team’s wide receivers.

Meanwhile, as Bieniemy begins his new chapter with the Bears, his former team, the Chiefs, will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9. It will be an exciting matchup between two formidable teams vying for the coveted championship title.
