US Election 2024

Former governor and presidential candidate becomes first to launch bid to chair Democratic Party

Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has thrown his hat in the ring for the position of chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), becoming the first person to announce a bid for the role. O’Malley, who previously served as the mayor of Baltimore and the governor of Maryland, made the announcement on social media, emphasizing the need for the party to connect with American families at their kitchen tables.

In his announcement, O’Malley highlighted the importance of focusing on jobs, opportunity, economic security, and a 50-state strategy to bring hope and progress to all Americans. He stressed the need for the party to get things done and move forward in a positive direction.

Currently serving as the commissioner of the Social Security Administration in President Biden’s administration, O’Malley is positioning himself as a proven operational leader and turnaround manager. He acknowledged the challenges facing the party and emphasized the importance of fixing problems rather than placing blame.

The current DNC chair, Jaime Harrison, is nearing the end of his term and is unlikely to seek reelection following the Democrats’ disappointing performance in the recent elections. O’Malley’s bid for the chairmanship has already garnered three endorsements from DNC members, with more conversations taking place in the coming days.

While O’Malley is the first to announce his candidacy, others are expected to follow suit as the party looks to rebound from recent losses. Among those considering a bid is Rahm Emanuel, a former congressman, Chicago mayor, and White House chief of staff who currently serves as the U.S. ambassador to Japan. Emanuel has reportedly been reaching out to DNC members as he contemplates a run for the position.

The next DNC chair will be chosen by approximately 450 voting members of the national party committee. As the race heats up, candidates like O’Malley and potentially Emanuel will be vying for the opportunity to lead the party forward and navigate a path to success in future elections.
