Former Hamas hostage Edan Alexander returns to New Jersey after 585 days

After nearly 600 days of captivity, Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli-American soldier, finally returned home to New Jersey amidst a heartwarming and emotional homecoming. The town of Tenafly, where Alexander hails from, was buzzing with excitement as hundreds of residents lined the streets, waving flags and holding signs to welcome him back.
Alexander, who was abducted by Hamas during a deadly assault on southern Israel, was seen smiling and waving from the passenger seat of a black SUV as it made its way through the town. The atmosphere was filled with joy and relief as supporters cheered and celebrated his long-awaited return.
Raised in Tenafly, Alexander had moved to Israel at 18 to serve in the IDF’s Golani Brigade. He was living with his grandparents in Tel Aviv and at Kibbutz Hazor, where he was part of a group of lone soldiers. His abduction by Hamas terrorists had left his community devastated, with weekly prayers and marches held in his honor.
In May, after more than 19 months in captivity, Alexander was released in a goodwill gesture following negotiations between U.S. officials and Hamas. The efforts of Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Special Hostage Envoy Adam Boehler played a crucial role in securing his freedom.
Rabbi Mordechai Shain, the family’s longtime rabbi, described Alexander as a kind and compassionate individual. He recalled how even as a young boy, Alexander was always willing to help others, a trait that ultimately led to his capture when he took a friend’s shift on the fateful day of his abduction.
As Alexander settles back into life in New Jersey, his community continues to support him in his recovery. Despite the physical and emotional toll of his captivity, Alexander remains determined to move forward and heal. His return has been a beacon of hope and resilience for his loved ones and supporters.
The journey ahead may be long, but with the unwavering support of his community, Alexander is determined to overcome the challenges he faces. As he focuses on his recovery, the outpouring of love and support from Tenafly and beyond serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
