Former Hamas hostage urges the UN to secure the release of those still in captivity

Former Hamas hostage Eli Sharabi bravely shared his harrowing story before the United Nations Security Council, urging world leaders to take action and bring all remaining hostages home. Sharabi’s nightmare began on Oct. 7 when Hamas terrorists attacked Kibbutz Be’eri, resulting in the deaths of over 100 residents and the abduction of 30 others, including his wife and two daughters. Tragically, Sharabi’s family did not survive the brutal attack, leaving him heartbroken and alone.
After spending 491 days in Hamas captivity, Sharabi, along with Or Levy and Ohad Ben Ami, was finally released on Feb. 8. The world was shocked to see the emaciated and traumatized state of the men, prompting global leaders to denounce the heinous crimes committed by Hamas. Sharabi recounted the horrors he endured during his captivity, including starvation, beatings, and witnessing the diversion of humanitarian aid by Hamas terrorists for their own benefit.
Sharabi exposed the cruel reality faced by hostages in Gaza, where Hamas would flaunt their lavish meals in front of starving captives, highlighting the blatant disregard for human rights. He called out the United Nations, the Red Cross, and the international community for their failure to address the atrocities committed by Hamas and for neglecting the plight of the hostages. Israeli U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon echoed Sharabi’s sentiments, criticizing the Security Council for turning a blind eye to the humanitarian crimes perpetrated by Hamas.
In a powerful plea to the council, Sharabi demanded the immediate release of all remaining hostages, emphasizing that the war would not truly end until every captive was brought home. He called on world leaders to take a stand for humanity and take decisive action to ensure the safe return of those still held captive by Hamas. Sharabi’s impassioned speech resonated with the council members, serving as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
As the world grapples with the devastating impact of Hamas’ reign of terror, Sharabi’s courageous testimony serves as a rallying cry for justice and accountability. His resilience in the face of unimaginable suffering inspires us to stand up against oppression and fight for the rights of all those who have been silenced and forgotten. It is time for the international community to heed Sharabi’s call and work towards bringing an end to the suffering of innocent hostages in Gaza.
