Former NYC Mayor Giuliani remembers best friend Bernie Kerik as ‘true patriot’

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, expressed profound sorrow over the passing of his close friend and former New York City Police Department Commissioner, Bernard “Bernie” Kerik. Kerik, who passed away at the age of 69 after a private battle with illness, was hailed by Giuliani as a “true patriot” and his “best friend.” The two had forged a strong bond during their time working together during and after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City.
Giuliani recounted the harrowing experience they shared on 9/11 when they saved each other’s lives, cementing their friendship forever. He described Kerik as one of the bravest men he had ever known, emphasizing the significant role Kerik played in guiding the city through the aftermath of the attacks.
Kerik’s illustrious 35-year career in law enforcement earned him over 100 awards for his meritorious and heroic service. He was commended by President Ronald Reagan for his heroism and received two Distinguished Service Awards from the Department of Homeland Security. Despite facing legal troubles in the past, including pleading guilty to felonies such as tax fraud, Kerik was ultimately pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2020.
Giuliani lauded Kerik’s unwavering love for the country and his commitment to serving others. He highlighted Kerik’s remarkable achievements as Commissioner of Rikers Island, where he significantly reduced violence in the prison, and as NYPD Commissioner, where he played a pivotal role in lowering crime rates in the city.
The former mayor also mentioned Kerik’s involvement in investigating claims of election fraud following the 2020 presidential election, showcasing their continued partnership in addressing critical issues.
Kerik is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son who also serves as a police officer. Giuliani extended his deepest condolences to Kerik’s family, emphasizing that all who knew and admired Kerik are better for having had the privilege of his friendship.
The legacy of Bernard Kerik, a dedicated public servant and a fearless leader, will undoubtedly endure through the impact he made on New York City and beyond. Giuliani’s heartfelt tribute to his dear friend serves as a poignant reminder of the profound bond they shared and the indelible mark Kerik left on the community he served with unwavering dedication.
