Former rural Sask. firefighter pleads guilty to hay bale arson

A shocking turn of events unfolded in Macklin, Saskatchewan, as a local man, Logan Sieben, pleaded guilty to arson charges related to a series of hay bale fires that plagued the community last summer. Sieben, who was a member of the same fire department tasked with extinguishing the fires he is accused of igniting, entered his plea during a hearing at Unity provincial court on Tuesday. Sentencing for the arson causing property damage charge has been scheduled for March 17.

The small town of Macklin was left bewildered by a string of hay bale fires that occurred between July 28 and August 25 last year. The all-volunteer fire department was called to extinguish a total of 20 fires during that period, leaving residents and officials puzzled by the mysterious incidents. The situation escalated to the point where a cash reward of $26,500 was offered for any information leading to the apprehension of the arsonist responsible for the fires.

The community’s apprehension came to an end when RCMP arrested Sieben, a 25-year-old member of the Macklin fire department, on August 26. It was a shocking revelation that someone within the fire department was allegedly behind the destructive fires that had plagued the town for weeks. Sieben’s involvement in the arson cases raised suspicions, as he still faces additional charges of arson with intent to defraud and theft under $5,000. These charges will also be addressed during the sentencing hearing set for March 17.

The images of volunteers from the Macklin fire department working tirelessly to extinguish the hay bale fires serve as a stark reminder of the impact of arson on a close-knit community. The dedicated efforts of the fire crews, who had to carefully dismantle the burning bales to fully extinguish the flames, highlight the importance of swift and efficient response to such incidents.

As Macklin prepares to move forward from this troubling chapter, the community can find solace in the fact that justice is being served. The sentencing of Sieben for his role in the arson cases will hopefully bring closure to the residents affected by the fires and serve as a deterrent against similar acts of arson in the future.
