Foul play ruled out month after body of Walmart employee found inside store’s walk-in oven

A month after the tragic discovery of a Walmart employee’s body inside a walk-in oven at a store in eastern Canada, authorities have determined that her death was not suspicious. The Halifax Police Department released a statement confirming that their investigation into the death of the 19-year-old woman found at the Halifax Walmart on Oct. 19 did not reveal any evidence of foul play.

In a video update shared on the department’s Facebook page, Halifax Regional Police Constable Martin Cromwell stated, “We do not believe anyone else was involved in the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.” Cromwell also mentioned that there were limited details that could be shared at this time and that further updates were not expected in the near future.

While the police have not disclosed the victim’s name, the Gurudwara Maritime Sikh Society identified her as Gursimran Kaur. The organization also set up a GoFundMe page, which raised over $194,000 for Kaur’s family. Describing her as a young woman with big dreams who had been working at Walmart with her mother for the past two years, the post on the fundraising page painted a heartbreaking picture of the events leading up to her tragic death.

According to the society executive, on the evening of Kaur’s disappearance, her mother became concerned after not being able to reach her daughter for an hour. Assuming that Kaur was helping a customer, her mother initially brushed off her concerns. However, as time passed and Kaur’s phone remained unreachable, her mother began to panic. Eventually, Kaur’s body was discovered inside the walk-in oven in the store’s bakery.

The society executive shared the harrowing experience of Kaur’s mother upon finding her daughter’s body, emphasizing the unimaginable suffering that the family is enduring. Kaur’s father and brother were reportedly in India at the time of her death.

Halifax police have met with the family to share the latest update and offer their condolences. The store where the incident occurred had been closed since the discovery but reopened on Monday, with the bakery oven being removed from the premises.
