Foundation demands RFK Jr. answer on mifepristone safety rollback
The Restoration of America Foundation (ROAF) is demanding answers from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding the removal of safety protocols for the abortion pill mifepristone. In a letter exclusively provided to Fox News Digital, ROAF argues that the rollback of these safeguards leaves women more vulnerable and shifts costs to taxpayers.
ROAF is specifically calling on the Senate Finance Committee to hold Secretary Kennedy accountable at Thursday’s 10 a.m. hearing. The organization argues that the Biden-era rollback of Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) requirements, which had been in place for over two decades, endangers women by allowing abortion pills to be prescribed via telehealth and delivered through the mail.
“The removal of key Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) requirements for mifepristone has eliminated essential safeguards that protected women’s health for over two decades,” said Doug Truax, founder and CEO of the Restoration of America Foundation. “We urge the Senate to demand clear answers about why these safety protocols were removed and when they will be reinstated.”
Originally, the Food and Drug Administration required mifepristone to be dispensed in person to ensure women were screened for potential complications such as ectopic pregnancy. However, under the Biden administration, telehealth prescribing and mail-order delivery were permitted for the first time.
Truax emphasized the importance of proper medical screening and access to emergency care for women using these powerful drugs. Allowing mifepristone to be ordered online and sent through the mail without proper safeguards puts women at serious risk.
In related news, more than 20 GOP attorneys general have called on Secretary Kennedy and the FDA to reinstate safeguards for abortion drugs. The debate over the safety and accessibility of mifepristone continues to be a contentious issue in the realm of women’s healthcare.
