Four ‘band dads’ take down elderly active shooter at band competition

The swift actions of four tactically trained “band dads” at a high school band competition in Texas helped prevent a bigger tragedy after they apprehended an active shooter who opened fire. The Pasadena Police Department confirmed that 83-year-old Dennis Brandl was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly walked into the entrance of the auditorium and fired a handgun.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Sunday, following a drum line competition at the high school. Brandl fired two shots, with one striking a door and another hitting a 26-year-old percussion technical consultant in the shoulder. Fortunately, the victim was taken to a Houston hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Immediately after the gunshots were heard, a group of four tactically trained “band dads” jumped into action and tackled Brandl. The heroes were identified as Air Force veteran Abram Trevino, Army veteran Adam Curow, Marine veteran Efrain (Polo) Castillo, and Houston Police Department Sgt. Joe Sanchez. Trevino, Curow, and Castillo all have military backgrounds, while Sanchez has served with the Houston Police Department for 32 years.
Curow and Sanchez described how they took down the suspect, with Curow grabbing Brandl’s arms while Sanchez removed the gun from his hands. Sanchez even used his belt to make a makeshift handcuff until law enforcement arrived to take over.
The Pasadena ISD police, along with a civilian and several other good Samaritans, joined in to help apprehend the suspect and ensure the safety of everyone at the event. The police department praised the actions of the bystanders, calling them heroic and emphasizing that their quick response prevented further violence.
While the motive for the shooting is still unknown, police are investigating the incident. Brandl claimed that he was being chased by someone and feared for his life and his wife’s safety. He is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues.
The school district confirmed that Brandl was not affiliated with the band contest, raising questions about why he was on the campus in the first place. Superintendent DeeAnn Powell expressed gratitude for the quick actions of staff members, police, and community members who ensured the safety of everyone present at the event.
The Houston Police Department also commended Sgt. Joe Sanchez for his selfless act in protecting lives during the incident. As the investigation unfolds, the community is coming together to support those affected and ensure the safety of students and staff at the high school.
