Four children from Halifax injured, New Brunswick dog killed in Cape Breton car crash

WHITESIDE, N.S. — A Christmas Eve two-car accident that required both drivers to be cut out of their vehicles is being investigated by RCMP in Richmond County.

Shortly before 6 p.m., a Volkswagen Golf and a Toyota van carrying six people from Halifax collided on Highway 104 near Whiteside.

A 42-year-old woman who was driving the van suffered life-threatening injuries and was extracted by firefighters before being transported to hospital. A 36-year-old man and children aged nine, seven, five and three all suffered injuries ranging from serious to life-threatening and also went to hospital.

RCMP said they do not comment on family relationships, but that all the occupants of the van share the same last name.

The 28-year-old man who was driving the car is from New Brunswick and also needed to be extracted from his vehicle with life-threatening injuries before going to hospital.

A dog was found deceased in the car, said an RCMP release.

The highway was closed for several hours while a collision reconstructionist was on the scene.
