Freed Israeli hostage speaks out for first time, says she has ‘returned to my life’ following Hamas captivity

After spending nearly 500 days in captivity, one of the three Israeli hostages released by Hamas is finally speaking out. Emily Damari, a 28-year-old dual Israeli-British citizen, expressed her gratitude and happiness on Instagram, stating, “Thank you, thank you, thank you, I’m the happiest in the world just to be.” Damari, who lost two fingers during Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, was reported to be in stable condition after being freed from the Gaza Strip.
In a heartfelt statement released by the Hostage and Missing Families Forum, Emily’s mother, Mandy Damari, shared her joy at being able to finally hug her daughter again. “Yesterday, I was finally able to give Emily the hug that I have been dreaming of,” Mandy said. She went on to describe Emily’s release as an “incredibly happy moment for our family” but emphasized the importance of remembering the 94 other hostages who are still awaiting their freedom.
While Emily’s resilience is evident, her road to recovery will require time and support from loved ones and medical professionals. Mandy noted that Emily needs time to heal, especially after losing two fingers on her left hand. Despite the challenges ahead, Mandy remains hopeful for Emily’s future.
The release of Emily Damari and her fellow hostages came as part of a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas. In exchange for their freedom, Israel released 90 Palestinian prisoners in the West Bank. The other two Israeli hostages released were identified as Doron Steinbrecher, 31, and Romi Gonen, 24.
As the families of the hostages celebrate their loved ones’ return, they also advocate for the safe release of all remaining captives. The ceasefire agreement marks a step towards peace, but the ultimate goal is the reunion of every hostage with their families.
The journey ahead may be challenging, but with the support of her family and community, Emily Damari is determined to reclaim her life and move forward. Her story serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of those who endure captivity and emerge with hope for a brighter future.
