Freeland says Canada’s borders are ‘safe and secure’ following Trump’s election win
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland reassured Canadians on Friday that the country’s borders are “safe and secure,” amid concerns that U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants could lead to an influx of migrants seeking refuge in Canada.
Freeland emphasized that Canada controls its borders and has the right to determine who is allowed to enter the country. She stated, “Every Canadian has the absolute right to expect that our country chooses who comes here and who doesn’t.” She also underscored that Canada will continue to ensure the safety and security of its borders regardless of global developments.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been preparing for months for a potential increase in migrant traffic at the border as undocumented individuals flee the United States. RCMP officials have indicated that they are ready to handle the situation by acquiring more resources such as police cruisers, buildings, and buses to transport migrants if necessary.
Despite the concerns raised by Trump’s allies about Canada potentially becoming a destination for undocumented immigrants, refugee advocate Abdulla Daoud believes the issue is exaggerated. Daoud noted that policy changes take time to implement, and any surge in migrants would likely occur gradually rather than overnight. He also questioned the validity of claims that millions of people would seek refuge in Canada following Trump’s election.
In response to Trump’s promise to end the war in Ukraine quickly, Freeland emphasized the importance of listening to the Ukrainian people and supporting their efforts. She praised Ukraine for its resilience in the face of external pressures and urged continued support for the country in its struggle against Russian aggression.
Ihor Michalchyshyn, executive director of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, expressed hope that Trump would prioritize building a strong relationship with Ukraine and continue to support the country’s efforts to defend its sovereignty. He emphasized the bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States and the shared goal of combating dictatorships and promoting global security.
Overall, Freeland’s reassurance about Canada’s border security and commitment to supporting Ukraine reflect the government’s steadfast approach to addressing challenges and upholding the country’s values and principles. The preparedness of Canadian authorities and the ongoing support for Ukraine demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding the nation’s interests and promoting international cooperation.
