Full statement from SAG chairman on writers’ strike
Hollywood actors, along with film and television writers, will strike at midnight on Friday, July 14 — the first time two major Hollywood unions have gone on strike simultaneously since 1960. And Fran Drescher, president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), has something to say about the.
“What happens here is important because what happens to us happens in all fields of work,” Drescher said at a press conference on Thursday. “Because employers prioritize Wall Street and greed, and they forget about the vital contributors that keep the machine running.”
While 11,500 Writers Guild of America members have been on strike since May 2 following the end of contracts and failed negotiations, productions in the US and abroad will be forced to halt as actors stop working in solidarity.
“If we don’t stand firm now, we’ll all be in trouble,” Drescher said. “We are all at risk of being replaced by machines.”
In Drescher’s statement, she calls out the studios for being on the wrong side of history.
“We are falling victim to a very greedy entity,” she said. “The mold is ready, AMPMT. We stand upright. You have to wake up and smell the coffee.”
