Gee-Gees beat Stingers to claim U Sports men’s hockey title; Bishop’s blanks Waterloo for women’s crown

The Ottawa Gee-Gees emerged victorious in the U Sports University Cup championship final against the Concordia Stingers, securing a 3-2 win at TD Place. Vincent Labelle, Bradley Chenier, and Luka Verreault were the goal scorers for the Gee-Gees, who surprised everyone by clinching the title as the lowest seed in the tournament. Mitch Martin played a crucial role with two assists, contributing to the team’s success.

Despite being outshot 33-14 by the Stingers, the Gee-Gees managed to maintain their lead throughout the game, with goaltender Franky Lapenna making key saves to secure the victory. Sean Larochelle and Mathieu Bizier found the back of the net for Concordia, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Ottawa’s strong performance.

In the bronze-medal final, the Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Toronto Metropolitan Bold 4-1, with Vince Loschiavo scoring twice and Justin Ball and Landon Kosior adding one goal each. Kevin Gursoy managed to score the lone goal for the Bold, who struggled to capitalize on their power play opportunities.

On the women’s side, the Bishop’s Gaiters claimed the U Sports Women’s Hockey Championship title with a 3-0 win over the host Waterloo Warriors. Gabrielle Santerre was the standout player of the game, scoring a goal and assisting on two others to lead her team to victory. Ericka Gagnon recorded a shutout in goal for the Gaiters, who appeared in the national final for the first time in the program’s history.

In the women’s bronze-medal match, the Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Concordia Stingers 3-1, with goals from Sophie Grawbarger, Abby Whitworth, and Scout Watkins Southward. Jessymaude Drapeau scored the lone goal for Concordia in a losing effort.
