Genetic makeup may be why you’re not losing weight, Harvard study finds

Genetic makeup can play a significant role in weight loss, according to new research from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Ben Gurion University in Israel. The study found that one-third of people who followed a healthy diet did not lose any weight, despite experiencing health benefits such as improved cholesterol levels, reduced hunger hormone leptin, and less visceral fat.

The study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, followed 761 individuals in Israel with abdominal obesity who were assigned to specific healthy diets for 18 to 24 months. While 36% of participants achieved clinically significant weight loss and another 36% achieved moderate weight loss, 28% did not lose any weight or even gained weight. Interestingly, those who were resistant to weight loss, mostly older individuals and women, still experienced the same health improvements as those who lost weight.

Lead study author Anat Yaskolka Meir emphasized that weight loss is not the only indicator of health, and that individuals who do not lose weight can still improve their metabolism and reduce their long-term risk for disease. Dr. Philip Rabito, an endocrinologist and weight-loss specialist, noted that genetic factors can play a role in an individual’s ability to lose weight, and that some patients may not respond as robustly to interventions as others.

For those who struggle to lose weight through traditional methods, prescription medications may be an option. Manoel Galvao Neto, M.D., director of bariatric research at Orlando Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery Institute, highlighted the importance of personalized obesity treatment based on genetic factors. He explained that individuals with genetic setbacks can still reach their fitness goals with the right approach.

Overall, the study underscores the importance of understanding one’s genetic makeup and seeking professional help for weight loss. While weight loss may not be achievable for everyone, participating in a weight-loss program can still lead to significant improvements in health parameters. With advancements in personalized obesity treatment, individuals have more options than ever to achieve their weight loss goals.
