Georgia lawmaker: Fulton County DA Fani Willis ‘thinks she’s above the law’

A Georgia state subcommittee and its attorney discussed the possibility of arresting Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for failing to comply with subpoenas during a hearing on Wednesday. While they did not confirm that they would take this action, they made it clear that it remains an option on the table.
The Georgia Senate Special Committee on Investigations has been embroiled in a legal battle with Willis over subpoenas for documents related to her investigation into President Donald Trump for alleged election interference, as well as a subpoena for her to testify. Despite the court ruling that the subpoenas are lawful, Willis has been challenging them since September 3, 2024.
During the hearing, Committee Chair Sen. Bill Coswert instructed the committee’s attorney, Josh Belinfante, to reach out to Willis’ counsel again to set a date for her testimony. If Willis continues to refuse to comply with the subpoenas, the committee may consider taking further action, including the possibility of arresting her for contempt of court.
Members of the committee expressed frustration with Willis’ repeated challenges to the subpoenas and her apparent lack of cooperation. They raised concerns about her recent travels with former special prosecutor Nathan Wade, questioning whether her personal schedule should take precedence over her legal obligations.
Belinfante explained that Willis has already handed over some of the requested documents to other entities, such as the U.S. House of Representatives and the Court of Appeals, and her legal team has exhausted all avenues for appeal. He emphasized that the committee has been patient with Willis, but they may need to escalate the situation if she continues to defy the subpoenas.
Overall, the committee is growing increasingly impatient with Willis’ lack of cooperation and is prepared to take further action if necessary. The possibility of arresting the district attorney for flouting subpoenas is being considered as a last resort to compel her to comply with the committee’s requests.
