Girl, 16, recovering in Ottawa hospital after vicious attack

A 16-year-old girl is currently in recovery at an Ottawa children’s hospital after a horrific attack allegedly carried out by her ex-boyfriend, who is now facing charges including attempted murder. The victim, Kaylie Smith, was airlifted to CHEO, a children’s hospital in Ottawa, after the incident which took place in Cobalt, Ontario.

According to Kaylie’s cousin Paige Smith, the attack occurred when Kaylie was getting off a bus near her home and her ex-boyfriend allegedly struck her with a vehicle before attacking her with a knife or machete. The severity of the injuries sustained by Kaylie is unimaginable – her left hand was completely severed from her body, her right hand was severely injured, and she suffered wounds to the back of her head. Kaylie underwent extensive brain surgery to remove an edged weapon that was lodged in her skull.

The accused, 18-year-old Phillipe Gagnon, is currently in custody and facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and procurement of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The community in Cobalt, a small town with a population of fewer than 1,000, is in shock over the incident. An online fundraiser has been set up to support Kaylie’s family, raising over $60,000 so far.

Kaylie is described by her family as a kind, artistic, and resilient individual who has a long road to recovery ahead of her. Despite the trauma she has endured, Kaylie’s strength and resilience are evident as she continues to fight for her life in the hospital. The community is rallying around her and her family, showing their support in any way they can.
