Global equines, athletes and Duchess of Edinburgh gather for 50th Spruce Meadows Masters this week

The 50th Spruce Meadows Masters is in full swing in Calgary, with 47 equine athletes and 98 horses from around the world competing in the prestigious event. The newly launched international stadium is hosting a variety of competitions, with winners from Ireland and Germany already taking home titles in the TELUS Cup and the Cardel Homes Cup.

One of the highlights of the event is the attendance of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Edinburgh, who is set to arrive on Friday morning. The Duchess will be involved in the Spruce Meadows Leg Up Foundation and will visit local charities supported by the foundation during her time in Calgary.

Business class for horses is a key aspect of the Spruce Meadows Masters, with high-performance sport horses flying in on chartered Boeing 747s from Europe. These horses travel in spacious containers, akin to business class, to ensure their comfort and well-being during the journey.

Despite the presence of wildfire smoke in the province, the event organizers have been vigilant about monitoring air quality to ensure the safety of both the equine and human athletes. The horses have been acclimating to the climate and altitude in Calgary in preparation for the competitions.

Reflecting on the 50 years of the Spruce Meadows Masters, organizers note the growth and success of the event. From a $10,000 Grand Prix in 1976 to a $5 million prize on offer this year, the event has become a staple in the equestrian world. The presence of international competitors and the support of the local community have solidified Spruce Meadows’ reputation as a premier equestrian facility.
