Golden Dome will require Manhattan Project-scale whole-of-government approach

President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ‘Golden Dome’ missile defense system in the United States has sparked discussions about the feasibility and necessity of such a project. Modeled after Israel’s successful Iron Dome, the Golden Dome would aim to protect the U.S. from a range of threats, including hypersonic missiles, ballistic missiles, and advanced cruise missiles.

Gen. Michael Guetlein, Vice Chief of Space Operations of the U.S. Space Force, likened the development of the Golden Dome to the Manhattan Project, emphasizing the need for a whole-of-government effort to bring the project to fruition. With the U.S. being significantly larger than Israel and facing potential long-range missile threats, the project would require unprecedented cooperation across defense and intelligence agencies.

Guetlein highlighted the importance of space-based sensors for early detection of incoming missiles, which would trigger rapid-response interceptors. The project would involve collaboration between the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, the Space Force, the Air Force, the Army, and the National Reconnaissance Office to ensure comprehensive protection of the homeland.

Challenges in organizational behavior and cultural barriers were also acknowledged, with Guetlein emphasizing the need to break down existing boundaries and foster collaboration among different agencies. The Golden Dome would represent a significant upgrade from the current Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system, which focuses on protecting the U.S. from a limited number of ballistic missiles.

President Trump’s call for funding for the Golden Dome has received support, with the president citing the need for a state-of-the-art missile defense shield to ensure the safety and security of American citizens. Drawing parallels to Ronald Reagan’s vision for a similar system, Trump emphasized the importance of staying ahead of evolving threats in an increasingly dangerous world.

As discussions continue on the feasibility and implementation of the Golden Dome, it is clear that a concerted effort from various government agencies will be required to bring this ambitious project to fruition. With a focus on protecting the homeland and advancing U.S. military capabilities, the Golden Dome could represent a significant step forward in national defense.
