Golfer apologizes after meltdown at PGA Championship

Wyndham Clark had a disappointing final round at the recent PGA Championship, where he reacted to a poor tee shot by angrily throwing his driver into a sign near the tee box. The incident occurred after Clark had just made a bogey on the 16th hole and hit his tee shot to the right.
The driver left a noticeable hole in the sign and the club’s head broke off upon impact. Clark then threw one part of the broken club to the side, narrowly missing a volunteer who was holding a flag. He left both pieces of the driver behind as he walked toward his golf ball in the bunker.
In a statement on Monday, Clark apologized for his behavior, acknowledging that his actions were uncalled for. He expressed regret for letting his emotions get the best of him and admitted that he needed to work on controlling his frustrations on the course.
The 2023 U.S. Open winner also mentioned that he fell short of the high standards he holds himself to and promised to handle his frustrations better in the future. Clark finished the PGA Championship in a tie for 50th place on the leaderboard, 15 strokes behind the winner, Scottie Scheffler.
Scheffler secured his third major championship victory at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, where the tournament was held. Clark’s rough showing included four consecutive bogeys on the front nine and ultimately ended in disappointment.
Despite the incident, Clark is determined to learn from his mistakes and improve his behavior on the course. As a professional golfer, he understands the importance of maintaining professionalism even in frustrating situations. Fans and fellow golfers will be watching to see how Clark handles himself in future tournaments.
