Google DeepMind calls for ‘responsible’ approach to AI amid ‘eureka moment’
TORONTO — The chief business officer of Google’s artificial intelligence research lab says the world is having a eureka moment around artificial intelligence, but we need to be responsible with the technology.
Colin Murdoch of Google’s DeepMind says the explosion of interest in AI stems from recent technological advances that allow anyone to use it in their native language.
Earlier, he says that programmers and other technology workers were the main people working with AI because it was much less accessible.
But Murdoch says ubiquity needs to be tackled with a careful approach and thoughtful consideration of all the risks AI poses.
He encourages companies using AI to establish external review boards that can pressure test AI for any dangers or ethical issues it encounters or creates.
He also says companies need to think ahead about the biases their technology may be built with or further entrenched.
